The San Antonio arts community is thriving.
In Fools Rush In, Alex's father (arguing with Isabel's father) says, "Culture? You call this culture? Guacamole and a ghetto blaster in the middle of a desert?" I've heard folks in this town disparage the culture here - all of it - including the arts community, and frankly, I don't understand. San Antonio has a lot to offer. As a writer and artist, I'm thrilled that the San Antonio arts community has grown significantly over the last two decades. Our city is becoming known as a destination for those who love art as well as guacamole, and Southtown with its small town atmosphere, good food, First Friday, and Contemporary Arts Month has everything to do with it.
When a community supports and encourages the arts, well, that's my idea of quality culture --, and we can all be a part of it, even if our only role is to munch on chips, guzzle margaritas, and tap our feet to some great tunes or shake our heads in disbelief at a gallery piece and say, "What the f... is that?"
Get out there!
If you are an artist, writer, musician, or just someone who appreciates entertainment and culture, there is plenty going on in this town.
There is something for everyone here, writers workshops, readings, galleries, the First Friday Art Walk, open mics, jam sessions, and plenty of great live music and food. So dust off those old poems, stories and canvasses. Grab your guitar, or simply find a spot to enjoy the activities that brighten your life.
You can find information on local events in the menu on the right, along with examples of my poetry and fiction. The gallery will return soon.
Enjoy!
If you spot me out on the town, wave and say hello, and feel free to contact me with comments on my work or suggestions for this site.
Best Regards,
Sean Ward
